A home redesign has the potential to become a bastion of waste. Thankfully, companies have grown aware of the impact home improvement can have on the environment, and have adjusted their manufacturing practices accordingly.
ETO Doors is proud to sell Forest Stewardship Council certified (FSC) doors in Brazilian Mahogany, the wood used for our most popular doors. What is FSC? The FSC is an international organization focused on sustainable forestry, and promoting better forest management. To learn more about the FSC, please visit www.fsc.org. Our FSC doors can be found at http://www.etodoors.com/search?q=fsc&x=24&y=11.
Remember, even if you don’t select one of our FSC doors, you are still making a ‘green’ design decision when you purchase a wood door. Whether your door is from ETO Doors, or otherwise, you are selecting a product derived from a renewal resource- trees. Most wood distributors make great efforts to help reforest the areas where they source, which not only protect our environment and help clean our air, but also ensure a sustainable business for the future.
OLD DOORS- NEW FURNITURE?
Once you’ve selected your new doors, it’s time to think about how you will dispose or re-use your current wood doors and door components.
REPURPOSE YOUR DOORS
Perhaps you’re thinking, “re-what?”, but wood repurposing has grown in popularity as means of creating new furniture or art out of reclaimed wood. While the reclamation process can be as complex as using old railcar furniture, as a DIY project, your source of wood is quite simple- your old wood doors. So, once you’ve located your doors at www.etodoors.com, and you’ve determined your door style by reading What’s Your Door Style? here on our site, you’ll be ready to un-hinge your current doors, install the new ones, and get ready to become an industrial designer in your own right.
As wood door manufacturer and distributor, it should be no surprise that our favorite repurposed items are wood doors. Your old wood door can turn into a table, wall art, and even a work bench- you’re only limited by your imagination and your (or you friend/husband/wife’s) ability to wield power tools. But whether your repurpose project simple or complex, Pinterest is full of ideas on how your old door can be reworked to become a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

GLASS RECYCLING
Glass recycling is one of the easiest ways to reduce waste when you are redesigning your home, and comes in handy when you are replacing old French doors and windows. Most cities have designated facilities operated by public or private companies that accept your glass, melt it down at an incredible temperature of 2600F-2800F, and then pour into molds for a variety of glass products.
To find a local glass recycling facility in your area, check out earth911.com.
DONATE YOUR DOORS
If your old doors remain in good condition, a local shelter or nonprofit may have need for them in their facilities. Make sure to call in advance to find out whether or not they can accept your doors, and to learn about any donation limitations.
Your design project doesn’t have to be an environmental guilty pleasure; by selecting FSC doors, or by repurposing your old doors, you can have maximum design results, with minimal impact on the environment.
Cheers to keeping it green!
